Architecture
The National Library Building at Victoria Street is a 16-storey state-of-the-art library with a 3-level basement situated in the heart of Singapore’s Arts, Culture, Learning and Entertainment hub.
The building consists of two blocks that house the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and Central Public Library collections and provide space for other public activities, including a 615-seat theatre. The site area is 11,304 square metres and the gross floor area is about 58,783 square metres.
The design of the new National Library Building functions as a cultural facility as well as a unique and enjoyable civic place for Singapore. The Library is an innovative “green” building designed using bioclimatic design techniques.
In May 2005, the new National Library Building was awarded the Green Mark Platinum award by the Building & Construction Authority. The Green Mark scheme is an inaugural award to recognise environmentally friendly buildings. The National Library Building is one of only two winners in the Platinum category, the highest in the Green Mark scheme.
Key Green Features
- Building is oriented away from the east-west sun, combined with sunshading features on the west face of the building as an additional shield against solar heat gain and glare.
- Energy efficient features include daylight sensors that are used together with automatic blinds at the building facades, motion sensors and energy efficient lightings.
- An open plaza area between the two blocks, which allows natural ventilation and daylighting.
- Extensive landscaping, sky terraces and roof gardens are utilized to lower local ambient temperature.
- Use of rain sensors as part of the automatic irrigation system for rooftop gardens. Water efficient taps and cisterns are also used to conserve water.
